EZEKIEL 39:23-24
And the heathen shall know that the house of Israel went into captivity for their iniquity: because they trespassed against me, therefore hid I my face from them, and gave them into the hand of their enemies: so fell they all by the sword. 24 According to their uncleanness and according to their transgressions have I done unto them, and hid my face from them.

We wont ever begin to grasp the righteousness of God when we don't  acknowledge God's truths in scripture. We learn that "God is love" and that's the extent of what some choose to want to understand, know and accept. . But God is also just and righteous! He wants His people to have hearts that desire to be filled by Him alone.

Rom 1:16-18
16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. 17 For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith. 18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;

We may acknowledge the Bible is indeed God's word, but we wont let God's Spirit give you understanding of His word. We want to chart the direction for ourselves and tell The Lord God what His truth is and is not. We attempt to re-write what holiness is and isn't.
 God has made it clear in Scripture. Time and again, Israel's persecution  was always because of their consistent, habitual and perpetually unrepentant disobedience, so it is with the New Testament Church as well.

Deu 28:15
But it shall come to pass, if thou wilt not hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to observe to do all his commandments and his statutes which I command thee this day; that all these curses shall come upon thee, and overtake thee:

It is especially horrific for the children (although they  always seem to be the resilient ones). However, it is the parents of the suffering children have to bear the spiritual weight of that burden. As a caring father, this is a rough and heavy cross to bear. When I was living an unfaithful life, it reflected in the life of my family. That's not to say that a life of faithful abiding brings a life of peaches and creme, but it DOES bring us in line with His Spirit, truth, inner peace and joy.
There is blessing in faithfulness and obedience, and there are curses and spiritual deaths in lives of those who have hearts filled with disobedience and unfaithfulness.
